INTRODUCTION

  • Read through all of the instructions before starting installation.

  • Notifications and warning texts are for your safety and to minimise the risk of something breaking during installation.

  • Ensure that all tools stated in the instructions are available before starting installation.

  • Certain steps in the instructions are only presented in the form of images. Explanatory text is also given for more complicated steps.

  • In the event of any problems with the instructions or the accessory, contact your local Volvo dealer.

  • Turn the ignition key to position I to release the steering wheel lock.

  • Disconnect the battery negative lead.


    Note!

    The SRS system remains active for a brief period after power is cut off. Thus, wait 3 minutes before starting work.

  • Turn the steering wheel a quarter turn so that the holes on the reverse of the steering wheel are accessible.

  • Insert a screwdriver in the hole (1) on the reverse of the steering wheel, at right angles to the rear surface of the steering wheel. Insert the screwdriver as far as possible to determine the position of the end of the spring clip (2).

  • Place the end of the screwdriver on the top of the locking spring, as illustrated.

  • Pry the screwdriver upwards towards the upper edge of the hole (1) so that the end of the screwdriver presses the spring clip down (2) until one side of the steering wheel module springs out and releases from the mounting.

  • Turn the steering wheel a half turn in the opposite direction. Carry out the same operation on the other side

  • Turn the steering wheel to a neutral position.

  • Fold the steering wheel module out

  • Remove the two connectors (1) for the ignition cables for the airbag. First press in the catches on the sides. Then pull the connectors straight out.


    Note!

    The connectors are tightly secured. However, tools must not be used when removing.


  • Place the steering wheel module to one side.


    Warning!

    Position the steering wheel module with the front upwards in a secure position while carrying out the work.

  • Remove the left and right keypad/keypad dummy from the steering wheel by carefully prying it off using a plastic weatherstrip tool. Twist the weatherstrip tool to pry each keypad out. They are firmly held in place by three lugs in the steering wheel, so some force is required to remove them.

    Applies to cars with an RTI keypad

  • Unplug the connector (1) for the RTI keypad on the right keypad.

  • Remove the screw (2).

    Applies to cars with an RTI keypad

  • Pry up the keypad at the front edge and unhook it from the steering wheel at the rear edge

  • Pull the cable out of the steering wheel.

  • Disconnect the ground lead.

  • Remove the three screws in the horn, pull it out slightly and disconnect the green connector (1).

  • Slacken the steering wheel screw, but do not remove the steering wheel yet.

  • Position the steering wheel straight.

  • Remove the screw (1). Install the screw in the contact reel (2).

  • Remove the steering wheel and pull the cables out through the hole in the steering wheel. Put the steering wheel aside.

    Applies to cars with vibration dampers

  • Remove the screw and the vibration damper. Transfer to the new steering wheel.

    Applies to cars with an RTI keypad

  • Remove the cover on the reverse of the right-hand spoke on the new steering wheel.

Applies to all models

  • Take the new steering wheel and insert the cables through its hole.

  • Carefully install the steering wheel by holding it straight and aligning the locating pins (1) on the contact reel.

  • Remove the screw (2) from the contact reel. Reinstall the screw in the holder (3).

  • Fit the new screw in the steering wheel. Tightening torque 40 Nm (30 lbf.ft.).

  • Take the horn with keypads.

  • Check that the three springs underneath the horn are in position

  • Install the horn in the new steering wheel.

  • Install the three screws and tighten them alternately to 8± Nm (6±1.5 Ibf.ft.).


    Note!

    The screws are self-tapping, which may make them difficult to screw in.


  • Insert the ignition cables in the holder (1).

  • Connect the green connector (2).

  • Check the function of the horn by pressing the horn around its entire circumference. A metallic noise should be heard when the three contact points come into contact with each other.

  • Connect the ground lead.

    Applies to cars with an RTI keypad

  • Insert the cables to the RTI keypad on the back of the steering wheel and pull them forward.

  • Reinstall the keypad on the reverse of the steering wheel. Tighten using the screw (1).

  • Plug in the connector (2) of the right steering wheel keypad.

  • Press the keypads into the steering wheel.

  • Check that the two springs (1) are in position

  • Check that the ignition cables are correctly positioned in the holder (2).

  • Press the two connectors for the ignition cables for the airbag into the steering wheel module

  • Insert the two pins on the reverse of the steering wheel module in the two springs. Ensure that the ignition cables are not trapped

  • Press the steering wheel module firmly into its mountings. Two clearly audible clicks should be heard.

Installing the negative lead after working with SRS components


Warning!

Make sure that no one is in the vehicle during this procedure.


  • Activate the SRS system as described in "VIDA Vehicle communication, SRS, powering the SRS system" before turning the ignition key.

    Initiating the windows

  • Initiate window position as described in VIDA Vehicle communication "Initiating window position".
