INTRODUCTION

  • Read through all of the instructions before starting installation.

  • Notifications and warning texts are for your safety and to minimise the risk of something breaking during installation.

  • Ensure that all tools stated in the instructions are available before starting installation.

  • Certain steps in the instructions are only presented in the form of images. Explanatory text is also given for more complicated steps.

  • In the event of any problems with the instructions or the accessory, contact your local Volvo dealer.

  • Turn the ignition key to position 0.


    Note!

    Wait at least three minutes before unplugging the connectors or removing other electrical equipment.

  • Remove the four screws (1) for the bumper. The screws are underneath the bumper and on the sides at the bottom of the tailgate opening.

  • Remove the five screws (1) holding the bumper cover at the rear edge of the wing liner in the rear wheel arch. Repeat on the other side.

  • Remove the end of the bumper cover. Grasp the bumper cover inside the wing liner. Pull carefully until the six catches at the top edge release. Repeat on the other side.

  • Remove the bumper cover by pulling it straight backwards.

  • Remove the cargo compartment carpet.

  • Prize off the four external clips at the front edge/bottom edge of the sill trim panel on the tailgate.

  • Pry up one of the corners of the sill trim panel so that the two clips at that end release. Use a weatherstrip tool.

  • Pull up the sill trim panel so the remaining six clips release. Remove the panel.

  • Detach the rubber strip where it covers the right-hand side panel in the boot opening.

  • Fold the seat cushion and backrest on the right-hand side of the rear seat forward.

  • Grasp the upper edge of the right-hand side cushion. Pull the side cushion forward so that the clip on the reverse releases (A).

  • Slide the side cushion upwards.

  • Remove the screw at the rear edge of the panel at the front/top of the right-hand side panel (B).

  • Pull the panel upwards so that the four clips on the inside release.

  • Pull off the rubber strip at the rear of the opening for the right-hand rear door.

  • Carefully pry off the lower panel on the C-post on the right-hand side. Pry the top edge using a weatherstrip tool. Pull in the C-post panel so that the two upper clips release. Then continue pulling down until the last two clips release.

  • Fold out the load securing eyelets on the right-hand side panel.

  • Insert a scriber with an angled tip into the holes in the top of the covers (1). Turn the scriber so that the tip engages the reverse of the covers. Pull the covers off.

  • Remove the screws in the load securing eyelets.

  • Remove the screw (2) at the front/top edge of the side panel.

  • Pull off the side panel at the top so that the two clips at the rear/bottom of the side window and the clip at the bottom of the D-post release. If the car has a 12V socket in the side panel, disconnect the connector from this socket.

  • Lift out the side panel.

    Applies to cars with reversing warning systems

  • Remove the parking assistance module (PAM) from behind the right-hand rear wheel housing to facilitate the access to route the cable harness to the towbar. If necessary, disconnect any surrounding cables.

  • Remove the upper floor supports on the left and right-hand sides if applicable.

  • Unscrew the two external clips at the front edge/bottom edge of the sill trim panel on the tailgate.

  • Pry up one of the corners of the sill trim panel using a weatherstrip tool so that the two clips at that end release.

  • Pull up the sill trim panel at the other end so that the remaining two clips release. Remove the sill trim panel.

  • Detach the rubber strip where it covers the right-hand side panel in the trunk opening.

  • Remove the three clips (1) that hold the right-hand side panel in the bodywork.

  • Unhook the side panel from the mounting (2) on the underneath of the parcel shelf.

  • Fold out the rear edge of the side panel from the bodywork. At the same time unhook the side panel from the rear load securing eyelet. If the car has a 12V socket in the side panel, disconnect the connector from this socket (if applicable).

  • Fold out the side panel to access the space in the rear of the wheel arch.

  • Take the wiring harness and protective cover from the kit.

  • Attach the protective cover to the 4-pin connector.

  • Take the connector holder from the kit. Fit the connector in the connector holder and press both halves of the holder together.


    Note!

    Make sure the protective cover retaining strap is not pinched but is positioned in the recess in the connector holder.

  • Install the assembled electrical connector from the kit for the four pin towbar wiring, on the bracket from the kit to the tow bar using the two screws and nuts. The connector must be positioned so that the single pin in the connector is at the top.

  • Install the trailer connector with bracket on the left-hand side, at the same time as tightening it to the L profile. Ensure that the bracket's front edge (1) is parallel to the front edge (2) of the holder. (See installation instructions for towbar).

  • Pull the cable up to the plastic bracket, route it to the right and secure it using two cable ties from the kit as illustrated.

  • Pull the wiring down underneath the collision member's right-hand mounting.

  • Secure the cable at the collision member with two joined cable ties from the kit.

  • Take pliers, P/N. 9987596, and widen the hole in the rubber grommet. Pull the cables through. Adjust the length of the cable harness up to the rubber grommet.

  • Insert the cable harness into the cargo compartment through the hole in the car body. Press the rubber grommet into place.

  • Remove the screw and the nut holding the AM/FM tuner module (AFM) in the bodywork. Disconnect the wiring if necessary.

  • Place the AM/FM tuner module (AFM) to one side.

Image B applies to the V50 with RTI (road traffic information)

  • Remove the screws and the nuts holding the AM/FM tuner module (AFM) and the traffic message channel module (TMC) in the bodywork.

  • Remove the AM/FM tuner module (AFM) and the traffic message channel module (TMC) from the bodywork. Disconnect the wiring if necessary.

  • Place the AM/FM tuner module (AFM) and the traffic message channel module (TMC) to one side.

  • Pull the cable harness from the towbar.

  • Press the connector's catch securely into place.

  • Press the connected connector into the trailer module (TRM).

  • Connect the ground lead from the routed cable harness to the ground terminal under the tail lamp and tighten the screw properly.

    Applies to the V50

  • Reinstall the AM/FM tuner module (AFM) / traffic message channel module (TMC).

  • Reinstall the insulation panel.

    Applies to the S40 (04-)/V50

  • Reinstall the Parking Assistance Module (PAM), if the car is equipped with one. Reinstall other detached cables.

  • Reinstall the side panel. If the car has a 12V socket, connect the connector to this.

    Applies to the V50

  • Tighten the screws for the load securing eyelets. Tighten to 24 Nm (18 lbf.ft.).

  • Reinstall the panel at the front/top of the side panel. Press downwards so that the catches engage. Tighten using the screw.

  • Reinstall the C-post panel.

  • Reinstall the rubber strip at the rear edge of the opening for the rear door.

  • Reinstall the side bolster.

    Applies to the S40 (04-)/V50

  • Reinstall the rubber strip in the tailgate opening.

  • Reinstall the sill trim panel in the tailgate opening..

    Applies to S40 (04-)

  • Reinstall the upper floor support if applicable.

    Applies to the S40 (04-)/V50

  • Reinstall the cargo compartment carpet.

    Applies to the V50

  • Fold the backrest and seat back into place.

    Applies to the S40 (04-)/V50

  • Reinstall the bumper cover.

To obtain the correct function, the trailer module (TRM) must be programmed with software before checks can be carried out.
