INTRODUCTION

  • Read through all of the instructions before starting installation.

  • Notifications and warning texts are for your safety and to minimise the risk of something breaking during installation.

  • Ensure that all tools stated in the instructions are available before starting installation.

  • Certain steps in the instructions are only presented in the form of images. Explanatory text is also given for more complicated steps.

  • In the event of any problems with the instructions or the accessory, contact your local Volvo dealer.

  

Note!

This accessory can be installed in the S40/V40 from model year 2003 inclusive.

Preparations

  • Position the steering wheel so that it is straight

  • Make a note of the radio code if the car has an anti-theft radio

  • Switch off the ignition

  • Disconnect the battery negative lead.


Note!

Wait at least five minutes before disconnecting the connectors or removing other electrical equipment.

  • Detach the steering wheel module (SWM) from the steering wheel by inserting a screwdriver in the hole underneath the vertical spoke for the steering wheel. Press in the steering wheel module (SWM) so that the spring clip is relieved.

  • Press the spring clip (A) on the inside. Carefully pull off the steering wheel module (SWM).


Hint

The spring clip is hidden behind the steering wheel module (SWM) holder. By holding the screwdriver at the angle illustrated it is possible to feel the spring clip using the tip of the screwdriver.

  • Carefully remove both SRS connectors (B) from the reverse of the steering wheel module (SWM). First press in the catches at the sides and then pull the connectors straight backwards


    Note!

    The connectors are tightly secured. However, tools must not be used when removing.


  • Disconnect the horn connector (C)

  • Remove the steering wheel module (SWM). Place the steering wheel module (SWM) to one side.


    Note!

    The steering wheel module (SWM) must always be positioned with the connection side (reverse) pointing downwards on a protected surface. Do not cover or position the steering wheel module (SWM) upside down. If deployed by accident the steering wheel module (SWM) will project itself violently.

  • Ensure that the steering wheel lock is locked

  • Remove the centre nut

  • Remove the rubber strap securing the wiring to the steering wheel module (SWM) from the hook (1) on the right-hand side

  • Lift out the steering wheel by turning and working the steering wheel.

Note!

Position the connector for the contact reel between the two lugs (D) on the contact reel.


  • Route the contact reel wiring through the hole in the steering wheel

  • Install the new steering wheel horizontally

  • Install the new centre nut for the steering wheel. Tighten the nut. Tighten to 43 Nm (30 lbf. ft.).

  • Pull out the wiring for the steering wheel module (SWM) and the cable for the horn

  • Connect the SRS connectors (B) to the steering wheel module (SWM). Check that the catches have engaged

  • Connect the connector (C) to the horn.

  • Secure the wiring by hooking the rubber strap on the hook (1).

  • Reinstall the steering wheel module (SWM) in the steering wheel. Position the lugs (E in illustration 6B) opposite the corresponding holes (G) in the steering wheel. Press the centre of the lugs so that the spring clip in holes (A) engage the lugs. Ensure that none of the wiring is caught or trapped.

    Check that:

  • The steering wheel can be turned easily

  • The steering wheel lock functions correctly

  • The steering wheel module (SWM) is secured properly.

Warning!

Ensure that nobody is in the car when connecting the battery.


  • Turn the ignition to position II

  • Reconnect the battery negative lead

  • Enter the anti-theft radio code

  • Set the car clock to the correct time

  • Check the function of the horn

  • Check that the SRS (supplemental restraint system) indicator lamp lights and goes out after approximately 10 seconds.
