INTRODUCTION

  • Read through all of the instructions before starting installation.

  • Notifications and warning texts are for your safety and to minimise the risk of something breaking during installation.

  • Ensure that all tools stated in the instructions are available before starting installation.

  • Certain steps in the instructions are only presented in the form of images. Explanatory text is also given for more complicated steps.

  • In the event of any problems with the instructions or the accessory, contact your local Volvo dealer.

  

Note!

This installation instruction shows the installation of the USB/iPod adapter and Handsfree with Bluetooth on left-hand drive vehicles. When installing in right-hand drive vehicles the steps are performed on the opposite side and/or mirrored. The right-hand drive design is also shown with text and pictures when operations differ.

When installing Velcro fasteners/tape the underlying surface must be kept at a temperature of at least +20° C (68°F).

The cable between USB/iPod adapter and music player can be ordered for USB, iPod, or both.

Wiring A is for vehicles with an internal amplifier that is located in the media player.

Wiring B and C are for vehicles with an external amplifier, located on the left-hand side of the cargo compartment.

Cars with Performance Sound have internal amplifier.

Cars with the High Performance and Premium Sound audio systems have external amplifier.

There may be components in the accessories kit that are not used for this installation.

Place the manual for this accessory in a suitable place in the vehicle.


 

Preparations

Preparations

  • Turn the ignition key to position 0.


Note!

Wait at least three minutes before unplugging the connectors or removing other electrical equipment.

  • Open the glovebox.

    Carefully pry off the panel at the rear of the centre console. Use a plastic weatherstrip tool. The panel is attached by two clips on each of the short sides.

  • Pull the panel away downwards.

  • Apply tape to the center console to protect it during removal and installation of the glove compartment.

  • Remove the panel.

  • Detach the clip holding the vent from the glove compartment.

  • Remove the rubber mat from the glovebox.

  • Remove the 5 x screws from the opening.

  • Pull the glovebox straight back in the vehicle in order to release the hidden clips, 2 pcs, in the top edge.

  • Remove the outer section of the glovebox.

  • Remove the screws for the vent.

  • Pull off the vent to the right and place to one side.

  • Remove the clips at the rear edge of the soundproofing panel and remove it.

  • Remove the surround around the display and media player:

    Press in the catch at one of the surround's upper corners. Use a small screwdriver. Carefully pry off the surround on the same side. Use a plastic weatherstrip tool.


    Note!

    Do not damage the panel and dashboard.


  • Repeat the procedure for the other side and then fold the surround backwards into the vehicle. Pull the surround up until it detaches.


Hint

If the panel is difficult to remove, press the panel on both sides again and repeat the procedure starting at the other side.

  • Remove the ignition control module (ICM). It is secured by hidden clips, 2 pcs.


    Hint

    Grip with both hands and pull.


  • Disconnect the two connectors. Put the display to one side.

      The fibre cables must not be bent with a radius less than 25 mm (1"). Make sure the cables are routed so there is no risk of wear.

    • Take the relay and two thick pieces of foam tape from the kit.

    • Connect the connectors from cable harness A to the mute relay.

    • Tape the foam tape pieces around the relay.

    • Place the relay between the white metal bracket (1) and the climate unit, high up on the bulkhead partition.

    • Connect the USB/iPod connector and the fibre optic cable's connector to the adapter.

    • Clamp the USB/iPod cable at the eyelet on the adapter using a tie-strap.

      Note!

      Do not damage the fibre optic cable.

    • Connect the gray connector (1) in the new cable harness to the corresponding socket in the media player.

    • Connect the gray connector (2) in the new cable harness to the gray connector (3) which was detached from the media player.

    • Plug in the connector (4) on the adapter cable's fibre cable to the media player.

    • Plug in the remaining connectors (5) on the fibre cables to each other.

    • Plug in the remaining connectors that were disconnected from media player.

    • Take a 700 mm (27 9/16") long piece of foam tape and cut into three equal pieces. Tape around the connectors (2) and (3). And a little around the connectors (5).

    Position the connectors to the left in the opening so that they are not in the way when the media player is installed.

    • Plug the remaining connectors which where detached into the media player.

    • Reinstall the media player and secure it.

     

    Installing the microphone

    • Unhook the sun shield from the bracket. Do this on both sides.

    • Pull off the driver's weather strip at the A-post and dashboard.

    • Pull off the panel from the A-pillar. The panel is secured by three clips.

    • Unhook the safety clip.

    • Lift the panel upwards and inwards in the vehicle.

    • Remove the panel.

    • Remove the interior lighting by grasping the front edge and pulling downward. It is held in place by six catches.

    • Cut one piece of the foam tape in half.

    • Pull down the headlining with the interior lighting frame slightly.

    • Route the microphone cable along the top of the existing cable harness as illustrated.

      Note!

      Position the cable so that it is not pinched when the sun visor mounting is refitted.

    • Make a mark on the foam tape which is attached to the cable, 230 mm (9 1/16") from the microphone.

    • Use a cable tie to fasten the cable at the mark at the existing connector.

    • Install the three trim screws.

    • Clean the area on the microphone and headlining panel as illustrated, which corresponds to the size of the double-sided adhesive tape. Use a solution of 25% isopropanol and 75% water, as well as a lint free cloth.

      Dry with care, do not rub.

    Note!

    In cases where the area is heavily soiled or treated with cockpit shine, first clean using a washing up detergent.


    • Remove the backing tape from one side of the Velcro strip and press it onto the microphone.

    • Remove the remaining backing tape from the Velcro strip and press the microphone securely onto the ceiling panel as illustrated.


      Note!

      Direct the microphone towards the driver.


    • Feed in any cable excess.

    • Take three small tie straps from the kit and secure the cable at the A-pillar as illustrated.

    • Refit the sun visor mountings.

    • Reinstall the A pillar panel and weatherstrip.

     

    Installing the control panel

    • Clean the area on the centre console as illustrated, which corresponds to the size of the double-sided adhesive tape. Use a solution of 25% isopropanol and 75% water, as well as a lint free cloth.

    • Grasp the upper edge of the right-hand side cushion. Pull the side cushion forward so that the clip on the reverse releases.

    • Slide the side cushion up. Remove the side cushion.

    • Repeat the operation on the other side.

    • Carefully pry off the lower panel on the C-post on the right-hand side. Carefully pry at the top edge. Use a plastic weatherstrip tool.

    • Pull the panel on the C-post so that the two upper clips release. Then continue down until the last two clips release. Remove the panel on the C-post.

    • Insert a scriber with an angled tip into the holes in the top of the covers (1). Turn the scriber so that the tip engages the reverse of the cover. Pull the covers off.

    • Remove the screws in the load securing eyelets.

    • Pull off the side panel at the top so that the two clips at the rear/bottom of the side window and the clip at the bottom of the D-post release.

    • Disconnect the connector for the 12V socket, if present.

    • This is carried out on the left-hand side on right-hand drive vehicles.

    • Unhook the front edge of the parcel shelf panel at the mounting (2), in illustration A. Pull the side panel away from the parcel shelf panel and the panel on the C-post.

    • Unhook the side panel from the mounting (3), in illustration B, on the underneath of the parcel shelf.

    • Disconnect the connector for the 12V socket, if present.

    • Unhook the side panel from the load securing eyelets (4), in illustration A. Remove the side panel.

    • This is carried out on the left-hand side on right-hand drive vehicles.

    • Route the cable (B) inside the floor carpets, the lower B-post panel and the insulation panels, back to the rear edge of the right-hand rear wheel arch. Route the cable along the existing cable harnesses in the cargo compartment.


      Note!

      Ensure that the cable is positioned so that there is no risk of it catching or rubbing.

    • Continue routing the cable harness to the amplifier.

    • Position the cable harness at the existing cable harness to the side and at the rear edge of the cargo compartment, all the way from the right-hand wheel arch to the amplifier.

    • the panel above the centre console. Check that the cable to the control panel is not pinched.

      Passenger compartment

    • the B-pillar panel.

    • Position the backrest and seat cushions back into place.

      Cargo compartment

    • the side panels.

    • the screws in the load securing eyelets. Tighten to 24 Nm (18 lbf.ft.) (applies to the V50).

    • the sill trim panel for the tailgate.

    • the upper floor support if applicable (applies to the S40).

    • the cargo compartment carpet.

    • Download software (application) for the accessory's function according to service information in VIDA. See VIDA or accessories catalogue for article number on software.

    • Turn the ignition key to position I.

    • Turn on the radio.

    • Check that the control panel for Bluetooth lights up.

    • Press the button (1) in the middle of the control panel. The radio should mute and a voice should be heard.

    • Press the button (2). The voice should now stop and the audio from the radio returns.
